RFC Märjamaa began with a group of local people, one unusually shaped ball and the belief that rugby could belong here.
What followed became a club, a community and a lasting part of Estonian rugby.

WHO WE ARE

A RUGBY CLUB WITH MÄRJAMAA AT ITS CORE.

RFC Märjamaa is rooted in camaraderie, commitment and the joy of playing together. We train as one, compete with purpose and welcome people who are ready to learn, contribute and belong.

The club has grown from an improvised local idea into a recognised force in Estonian rugby, while keeping the small-town character and shared responsibility that shaped it from the beginning.

01  /  THE BEGINNING

ONE IDEA BECAME A CLUB.

RFC Märjamaa was formally established on 19 April 2009 after a group of local boys became fascinated by rugby. Rainer Koppel transformed that spark into a real club, building the structure that allowed the idea to survive and grow.

What began as an impromptu decision, sparked by glimpses of rugby on YouTube, was shaped into a concrete vision through Rainer's determination and relentless effort. He coordinated the work that brought the club together and made rugby accessible locally. Others played important roles, but Rainer remained the driving force behind the club's formal creation. His influence extends beyond the pitch: he is a familiar and respected figure in Märjamaa, and his contribution remains woven into the club's history.

02  /  WHY VIKAT?

A NAME SHAPED BY HOME AND PLAYING STYLE.

Märjamaa is the town where the journey began. Vikat means scythe: a name that came to represent forceful running, committed tackling and a team prepared to work for one another.

The name Märjamaa Vikat reflects humble beginnings in a small Estonian town and a direct, physical identity on the field. The scythe became a fitting symbol for robust runs and formidable tackles, but the name also carries the club's wider character: training together, enjoying the game collectively and building friendships that continue long after the final whistle.

03  /  THE FIRST BREAKTHROUGH

SECOND PLACE. FIRST PROOF.

Only months after the club was formed, RFC Märjamaa entered the Estonian Beach Rugby Festival and finished second. That unexpected result gave the team its first proof that the experiment could become something enduring.

The inaugural competitive appearance arrived far earlier than anyone expected. Competing against established opposition and leaving with a runner-up finish turned curiosity into conviction. It was the moment that strengthened the club's belief in choosing the uniquely shaped ball and encouraged the players to keep building.

RFC Märjamaa has competed across beach rugby, Olympic rugby, snow rugby, Rugby XV and Baltic competitions. Club players have represented Estonia, joined teams at home and abroad, and carried the standards learned here into the wider game.
